Poon Hill (Ghorepani)

The usual first trek from Pokhara. Stone stairs, rhododendron, a dawn hill at 3,210 m if the cloud lifts. Teahouses the whole way.

From Nayapul the trail follows the river, then climbs the stone stairs out of Ulleri into Magar country. Above that the path is rhododendron and oak to Ghorepani, a lodge village on a saddle. Before dawn you walk a short hill to Poon Hill (3,210 m). If the cloud lifts, Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna wall stand in a line; if it does not, you get a foggy knoll and tea.

The country is villages, terraces, and forest — not glacier. You pass other walkers most of the year. October is a procession. The return often drops to Tadapani and Ghandruk, with Machhapuchhre in the east windows.

Usual nights

One common outline. Villages and camps shift with the road and the season.

  1. Tikhedhunga or Ulleri Teahouses
  2. Ghorepani Many lodges — the usual Poon Hill night
  3. Tadapani or Ghandruk Teahouses

Wikipedia and the agencies put the walk from Pokhara at two to four days; the usual teahouse circuit with a Ghandruk night is three or four. ACAP permit (and whatever TIMS or guide rule is current — ask in town, not a blog). Jeeps leave Lakeside around 4:00 for Nayapul. Ulleri stairs are the hard morning. This is not a booking, and the view is a guess until you stand there.

Days are a usual range, not a promise. Jeeps, snow, and your pace change them. Permits and guide rules change — ask in Pokhara before you go.
