Mahendra Cave

Limestone cave north of town. Lit walkways, bats if you go on to Bat Cave. A half-day with a taxi, not a wilderness trip.

Mahendra Cave is a limestone cave at Batulechaur, north of the city. Locally it has been called Chamero Odhaar — house of bats. Shepherd boys are said to have found it around 1950; it is named after King Mahendra, who visited in the late 1950s. A few hundred metres of lit passage, stalactites, a Shiva shrine near the entrance. Bring a torch you trust; the lights fail.

Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa) is a separate ticket nearby. This is a half-day with a taxi, not a wilderness trip. The floor is uneven. Not for anyone who hates low ceilings.
