Bindhyabasini Temple
Old Pokhara’s hill temple. Bhagawati, bells, and a view back over the bazaar. Come in the morning with the city, not the tour van.
Bindhyabasini is one of Pokhara’s oldest working temples, on a hillock at the north end of the old bazaar (Miruwa / Old Pokhara), dedicated to the goddess Bindhyabasini, a form of Durga. The shrine is usually dated to the 1760s, around the time the Shah state was expanding west. A priest appointment is recorded in 1815. Most of the city burned in 1949; the fire is often said to have started here during an offering.
Come in the morning with the neighbourhood, not in a tour van at noon. Bells, vermillion, and a view back over the bazaar. It is a city temple first.
