World Peace Pagoda
White stupa on the southern ridge. Boat to the far shore and climb, or taxi the long way. The city and the lake flatten into a diagram.
The World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) stands on Anadu Hill, south of Phewa, at about 1,100 metres. It is a white Buddhist stupa built by the Japanese order Nipponzan-Myōhōji with local support. Nichidatsu Fujii laid a foundation with Buddha relics on 12 September 1973; the government later halted the work; Girija Prasad Koirala re-laid the stone in 1992; the stupa was inaugurated on 30 October 1999. It is usually described as Nepal’s first Peace Pagoda of this programme, and one of dozens worldwide.
Four Buddha figures face the cardinal directions, gifts associated with Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal. The point of the walk is the view: lake, city, and the Annapurnas if the air is clean. Common approaches are a boat to the far shore then a climb of half an hour to an hour, or a taxi the long way and a short walk. There is a dharma hall beside the stupa.
